A LAY INITIATIVE FORMED TO DEFEND

CATHOLIC TEACHING ON THE FAMILY

Is the American soul for sale?

So-called “pro-life posturing” that admits to allowing aborting an innocent preborn child until the fifteenth week of life is nothing short of demonic. Not only do such flawed proposals as those embraced by former American president Donald J Trump defeat the goal of total protection for every vulnerable human being, but they telegraph the message that there is now no such thing as a truthful pro-life advocate. If you doubt this in the least, perhaps the following example will enlighten the conversation.

Consider the case of the two-year-old little girl who has developed problem behavior that is so frustrating that her parents cannot handle her any longer. And so, as the adults in the room, they decide to put her out of the house. Having delivered her to a nearby alley, they simply await the news that she has either been taken by wild dogs or died of starvation.

Observers are horrified and report this incident to the local police, who in turn, through DNA, are able to identify the remains and subsequently charge the parents with manslaughter. “What a horrific crime,” you might say, but the question is, “When is a crime like this one considered acceptable in polite society?”

The answer is, “At any point prior to giving birth to a baby.” In America, such an act is considered a mere parental choice and nothing more need be done about it. This is the height of moral relativism, of course, but what should we expect in today’s atmosphere of hollow rhetoric and planned deception?

If this appears to be outrageous to you then you must concede that political figures like Trump and his compadre J D Vance are guilty of approving the killing of children as long as they have not yet reached fifteen weeks gestational age. In America, they call this position “pragmatic”, noting that, since Trump has suggested that each of the 50 United States consider the question rather than a national law being proposed, he is being “politically realistic“.

Celebrating this diluted attitude toward abortion, the Republican platform states the following regarding the decriminalization of abortion: “After 51 years, because of us, that power has been given to the States and to a vote of the People. We will oppose Late Term Abortion …”

In other words, the political message is that preborn babies will continue to die at the hands of abortionists and through the use of chemicals, and nobody is concerned about this carnage. Thus the scientific truth that a preborn child is a human being has been expunged from the political landscape. The explanation is that if the American people will not support a totally pro-life position then politicians have to go with the flow if they want to be elected.

This all sounds vaguely familiar to those of us who have been in the pro-life trenches for many years, and we understand the reasons why our demand that abortion be called by its proper name — murder — is anathema to the politically motivated. They have myriad reasons for ignoring truth, including such arguments as:

  • “I want to win!”
  • “I want to gain a majority!”
  • “I do not want to advocate an extreme positions to my supporters!”
  • “We must raise more money and so we must sound reasonable!”

No matter what argument you hear, the point is that defining the preborn human as a person is not in the cards … or so the soothsayers would have us believe. But I have news for them: truth cannot be amended to suit an agenda, regardless of what the people say.

Trump should be ashamed of himself, but even more so his Catholic running mate, J D Vance. Since when are we kicking Christ and His children to the curb in order to curry favor among the arrogant and the ignorant?

It is time to tell the truth, regardless of the consequences. We are not called to be popular, to win elections or to rank highest on the publicity score card. We are called to be faithful and never cease to defend the truth.

Babies are counting on us and, at a more fundamental level, we cannot afford to sell our souls to compromisers and pragmatists, unless, of course, we are hitching a ride to Hell.
