CATHOLIC TEACHING ON THE FAMILY

Our Lady of the Rosary Family Catechism opens the treasury of our faith

With the new academic year about to begin, we would like to take the opportunity to invite all those who have not yet done so to join Our Lady of the Rosary Family Catechism. Launched by Voice of the Family in 2020, it has since been cherished by thousands of families worldwide.

Our Lady of the Rosary Family Catechism is an online video catechism course, carefully produced for children around the age of their first holy Communion. However, it has provided entire families and people of all ages and backgrounds with the timeless teaching of the Church, as faithfully set out in one of the most highly perfected catechetical works ever produced: the Baltimore Catechism

The catechism course is made up of easily accessible lessons, presented by Fr Anthony Pillari JCL, MCL, STL, with a view to enabling all children to receive “the same spiritual training as the children of Fatima” and commit the whole Catechism to memory, with a well-designed progress and reward system, by which children earn, piece by piece, what St Paul calls “the armour of God” (cf. Eph 6).

In memory, God has given us a profoundly effective tool for learning, storing and recalling information, which is too often neglected in modern education systems. And yet, this is how generations of Catholics have kept and passed on “the victory which overcometh the world, our faith” (1 John 5:4).

By taking up the delightful challenge of traditional Catholic formation with the aid of classical learning techniques and beautifully presented material, participants can join the mission to which Our Lady called Lucia, Francesco, Jacinta and all the faithful at Fatima just over one hundred years ago: to work for the salvation of souls by striving for holiness in our daily lives.

We have been greatly encouraged by His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke who most generously recommends the programme in the following words:

“A fundamental and most serious obligation of parents is the catechesis of their children, as the catechesis of children is also a principal obligation of pastors or parish priests. In the totally secularised culture in which we live today, parents and pastors face a difficult challenge in communicating the truths, goods and beauties of the Catholic faith to children. Our Lady of the Rosary Family Catechism provides an inestimable help to parents, by responding to the maternal counsels of the Virgin Mother of God during her apparitions at Fatima in 1917 and by drawing upon the centuries-old wisdom of the Baltimore Catechism, with its roots in the incomparable Catechism of the Council of Trent. Father Anthony Pillari presents the questions and answers of the Catechism to children of today, in order that an ever fuller knowledge of the faith and an ever deeper love of Our Lord will lead to their strong witness to Christ in the world and finally to their eternal salvation. Of special merit is the consistent emphasis on memorisation, so that the saving truths of the faith may become ever more the key which opens up the meaning of life lived in Christ for children and young people. I highly recommend Our Lady of the Rosary Family Catechism to parents as an invaluable tool in fulfilling their irreplaceable duty to educate their children in the faith, in prayer, devotion and Sacred Worship, as the highest and most perfect expression of the faith, and in the daily witness of faith through the life of the virtues. Finally, I express heartfelt gratitude to the Voice of the Family for making possible this most wonderful gift for parents and their children.”

The programme

The key teaching of the programme takes the form of 41 online videos — with three introductory videos, 37 videos of lesson content and one closing video. The content for the 37 lessons follows the structure of the Baltimore Catechism, which is covered in its entirety. Activity packs for each lesson are also available. These can be downloaded and printed, providing a very useful aid for memorisation.

Each video lesson begins with the prayer taught by Our Lady to the children of Fatima and a brief Bible reading, normally taken from the Gospel. This is followed by a presentation and explanation of the questions and answers from volumes 1 and 2 of the Baltimore Catechism, also drawing from the teaching precisions outlined in volume 4. Each lesson finishes by introducing the children to the life of a saint or a great miracle from the history of the Church, such as a Eucharistic miracle.

The present need

The deep crisis in the Church and in the world today can only be overcome by a renewed commitment to our Catholic faith. Knowing the catechism well will lead us to truly live the faith and rebuild our Christian society. We are particularly delighted that this programme has proved to be a real asset to Catholic parents, called to be the primary educators of their children, especially in the most important area of education — forming their children in the faith.

Children of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate in the course. Adults, who may wish to learn the basic teachings of the Catholic Faith, are also invited to follow the programme. Having received moving testimonies over the past two years from families who have been brought to a stronger commitment to their faith while following this programme with their children, as well as adults for whom this programme has been an important factor in their returning and even converting to the faith, we encourage everyone to sign up today!

Registration for Our Lady of the Rosary Family Catechism, with unlimited access to the lessons and learning material is completely free of charge. If you have already benefitted from the programme, please consider sharing it with other families and individuals who may appreciate it. What greater gift could we give another than our Catholic faith?
